Is Synthetic Grass Safe?

During the decades of the usage of synthetic grass, people usually concern about its safety. Because of its characteristics such as child-friendly, pet-friendly, there are many debate about difficulties that may be occured when we use synthetic grass like health hazards. Therefore, there are numerous researches on the safety of both old and new artificial grass.

Synthetic grass is safe for Sports. Based on a research of the Environmental Protection Agency, there is no threat to kids and people who inhale the lead particles in synthetic grass . Although we increase the amounts of lead in synthetic grass, there's no problem to health hazard. The EPA also make another research on the crumb rubber,or crushed tire rubber pieces which exist in synthetic grass. They pick out a sample and test on the playground that children used to play. The result show that there's no harm for the kids.

Researches on synthetic turf and heat showed that the surface temperatures of artificial grass is quite high, especially on sport fields. Research have shown that artificial turf can reach up to approximately 173 degrees Fahrenheit. This result was for places under extreme direct sunlight. It was noted that the infill beneath the turf was a substantial aspect in determining heat and surface temperature. Modern infill technology has helped to keep these extreme temperatures down. Also, research showed that simple hosing or watering synthetic grass could decrease average synthetic grass surfaces by approximately 50%. In a specific study involving the use of a sprinkler system and a football field, the entire football field’s surface temperature was reduced a total of 60 degrees. Thus, any heat concern can easily be remedied with the use of water to effectively reduce surface temperatures and the trapping of heat.

Concerning studies about athletic synthetic turf and possible sports injuries, turf was found to have more velocity, torque, and traction. Thus, a different array of minor injuries, such as muscle spasms and strains were found with athletes who played on synthetic grass. Altogether, athlete injury frequencies were basically the same between artificial grass fields and natural grass fields. However, natural grass fields actually showed instances of other injuries, because it consists of mud, potholes, dips, uneven surfacing, and more. These could result in more serious injuries overall.

With constant research in place, that status of synthetic grass safety is usually kept up to date. Whether company-hired studies or university studies are conducted, safety levels are, for the most part, effectively measured. These research continue to prove the safety of synthetic grass as a product for varied households and athletes alike.
